I left Sweden the 3 September and flew to Warsaw in Poland. The 5 September I went to Krakow in the south were I lived until 8 October. I didn’t have time to do so many things in Warsaw, but I’ll write a short post about the city.

Things to do and see in Warsaw

Warsaw got hit real bad during WW2, about 90% of the city was destroyed. First they were not sure it would be worth to rebuild it and there were some plans to change Capital. Because of this many old buildings in the city are not the originals, but rebuilt ones.

Some of the most famous sights in Warsaw I had the time to do were:

  • Old Town
  • Castle Square
  • Warsaw Barbican
  • The Palace of Culture and Science
  • Monument to the Warsaw Uprising Fighters

I thought the Palace of Culture and Science was a really interesting building. You could say it’s the most famous but also the most hated building in Poland. The reason is it remind many poles of the former Soviet sovereignty. The Palace of Culture and Science was ordered by Stalin as a “gift” to Poland, whom still had to pay a large part of it. It was built in a fast pace and was finished after only 3 years. Sixteen workers lost their lives during the construction. The Palace of Culture and Science was for a long time one of the tallest buildings in Europe.
